about

What. Nothing happened. Clearly.

Okaaaay. There are many references to Somewhere Over the Rainbow in this one. It was my favourite song at the time. Also I change up the last line of that verse thing often (I either stick with 'free flies a bluebird' for both verses or swap their order over) so the thing below here references it in a different order hahahaaa...

Here's what I said about it a couple of years ago when we first posted a duo version on soundcloud:

The first and most straight forward meaning is a literal statement of how it feels to have de-realisation disorder. De-realisation/de-personalization disorder is an anxiety condition. The de-realisation aspect of it is where everything feels like a dream that in any moment could turn into a nightmare. It literally feels like the sky will open up, or that anything you can't see no longer exists - the ground disappears behind you as you walk. But of course nothing ever actually happens. Unless one has a touch of psychosis as well, then it might be perceived as actually happening. De-personalization is where it feels like your body isn't your body and you're not in control of it. It feels very far away. They both get worse the more you think about them and produce a lot of anxiety which makes them worse again [cyclical]. Psychologists and doctors have not figured out a solution. I found that when it was really bad repeating 'life's a trip, go with it' actually helped [edit: and as stress and anxiety reduces, so does this. It's not out of control anymore. But I still don't feel like things are real].

The second meaning is again taking from the literal 'nothing happened' but in the case of denial [repression]. Something happened but you don't want to think about it and it's there, an ant, in your brain, creeping over you, changing the way everything is perceived but you're still trying to repress it. The shadow down the hallway carries a deep feeling of dread that you'll have to face it or it will eventually creep up on you and affect your life -- perhaps it will destroy everything you have been working towards, or the parts of life you had taken for granted. Nothing is safe.

There are many references throughout to 'somewhere over the rainbow' as this was my favourite song at the time and I found it quite bitter-sweet. 'The sky opens up it'll take me over the rainbow' at the end of the first chorus/verse is a small hint at the possibility that this isn't such a bad thing after all, it carries a small ray of hope that the bad thing needs to happen in order to get to where we want to be. Maybe we can make it there. This chorus/verse is followed with a darker second chorus/verse and it's desire for escapism; 'My head will open up and ooze out a rainbow'. To be somewhere else, not having to deal with all the darkness and fear in this moment, free from problems. This shows that the ray is a small one and easily crushed by the dread and problems of the present moment. Also that the rainbow is oozed out shows some force - it does not spring out of its own accord [and indeed, staying in the present moment is more difficult with the weight of this repressed happening]. It is becoming so dark that it is difficult to think of hope, it must be forced. The repetition of the 'there's an ant' emphaizes that the darkness, the ant, the happening or repeated self accusation will not go away. This final chorus/verse finishes with a reference to the bluebird which in 'Somewhere over the rainbow' is free and able to fly over the rainbow while we cannot; 'free flies the bluebird'. It can escape but not us [we are trapped]. We must go through this. The music echoes this same torture and darkness.

lyrics

Nothing happened
Nothing happened
Nothing happened
Nothing happened

There's an ant inside my
There's an ant inside my brain
There's a shadow waiting
Down the hallway
The sky opens up it'll take me
Away
The sky opens up
It'll take me
Over the rainbow

Nothing happened
Nothing happened
Nothing happened
Nothing happened

My head will open up and
Oooze out a rainbow
There's an ant inside my
There's an ant
The sky will open up and take me
Away
The sky will open up and
Free flies the bluebird
