about

Inspired by a story Lott Larsson told us about competitions to break pianos. Apparently back in the olden day in New Zealand there was a a cut to funding for arts and social services sectors. So places that had up until then held beautiful old pianos (like hospitals) could no longer afford to keep them in tune. Suddenly there was a surplus of old pianos and someone decided the best was to get rid of them was to hold competitions to destroy them. Teams were pitted against each other, armed with various tools and weapons, and set to destroy the pianos. The winning team was the first to be able to fit the piano pieces through a pre-determined sized hoop or some such. A terrible yet amazing end to such beautiful instruments.

If anyone has any information about this story we would love to hear it. Perhaps it is true legend. Perhaps it is a myth. Either way we would love to know more.
